Smart Home for Elderly Parents When You Live in Another City

Parents living alone? See the gate on your phone, open the door from afar, get gas, smoke and tank alerts, and keep it all working in a power cut.

If your parents live alone while you live in another city or abroad, their smart home should do five things: let you and them see and speak to whoever is at the gate, let you open the door for someone you trust, warn the family about gas, smoke or an empty water tank, keep working through a power cut, and leave every switch in the house working by hand. Plan it with your parents, not for them, and put the points and pipes on the electrical drawing before the walls are plastered.

Seedhi baat: Maa-papa ke liye smart ghar aisa ho ki woh bina phone ke bhi sab chala sakein, aur aap door se sirf zaroorat par madad karein.

Start with a conversation, not a shopping list

Ask what worries them and tell them what worries you. Usually it is the same short list: strangers at the gate, the gas left on, the water motor, the geyser, a fall at night, a long power cut. Then agree on what you will see from far away.

  • Cameras outside are the easy part. Gate, parking and main door. Point them at your own property, not into a neighbour's window.
  • Cameras inside only with their agreement. Never in bedrooms or bathrooms. Plug an indoor camera into a switched socket, so your parents can turn it off with a normal switch when they want privacy.
  • Share access with someone nearby. A sibling, a relative or a trusted neighbour who can reach the house in minutes, with the same alerts you get.

The gate and the main door

A video door phone that rings your phone too

The bell at the gate rings the screen inside and, if the unit is on the network, your phone as well. Your father sees the courier from his chair; you can see the same visitor from Pune or Dubai and speak to them. What the house needs: a cable from the gate to the indoor screen, power at both ends, and a network point or strong Wi-Fi at the screen.

A smart lock you can open from afar

For the maid, a relative or a nurse when your parents cannot get to the door. To open it from another city, the lock has to be connected, so plan a power point and the network near the main door, and choose the lock before the door is ordered, because the lock decides the door and frame. If the lock offers temporary codes, give those instead of the master code. Keep a key with a trusted neighbour, and ask how the lock opens if its battery runs down.

A camera at the gate

One camera covering the gate and the parking. Footage recorded inside the house, on a recorder or a memory card, is still there when the internet goes down. Put the recorder on the inverter.

Everything at the gate faces the monsoon. The IP rating on the box tells you how well it keeps out dust (the first digit) and water (the second); enclosures tested against rain carry ratings such as IP65 and IP66.

Water tank and motor

The motor is a daily chore, and often the reason an older person climbs to the roof. A level sensor in the overhead tank and a controller at the motor starter switch the pump on when the tank is low and off when it is full. Ask for dry-run protection, which stops the pump when there is no water to lift. If the controller can send alerts, you will know when the tank has stayed empty all day. What the house needs: a pipe from the roof tank down to the motor point for the sensor wire, and space beside the starter.

The geyser

A smart switch on the geyser can turn it on at 6 am and off after the bath, and show you from your phone whether it was left on. The geyser is usually the heaviest load in the bathroom, so check that the current rating printed on the smart switch covers the rating on the geyser's own plate. Its ordinary switch must still work by hand.

Gas, smoke and fire

  • Gas alarm at the right height. HPCL explains that LPG is almost twice as heavy as air and settles at floor level, so an LPG alarm goes low, near the cylinder. Piped natural gas is lighter than air and rises, Central UP Gas explains, so a PNG alarm goes high.
  • No fan on the gas alarm. Indian Oil's advice for a leak is not to operate electrical switches or appliances in the room. The alarm should sound and alert your phones; it should not start the exhaust fan or the chimney.
  • The regulator at night. Indian Oil also advises switching off the regulator every night before going to bed. A bedtime reminder on the smart speaker helps the habit.
  • Smoke alarms where they sleep. NFPA, the US fire-safety body, advises smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level, connected so that when one sounds, they all sound, and tested at least once a month. It also says alarms should be replaced when they are 10 years old.
  • If hearing is weak. NFPA notes that people who are hard of hearing can use special alarms with strobe lights and bed shakers. Alarms that also alert your phone mean you know even if they did not hear it.

Power, inverter and solar

Decide on the drawing which circuits run on the inverter: the router, the door phone, the camera recorder, and a light and fan in each room your parents use. If the inverter or the solar inverter has a monitoring app, you can see from far away when the battery is low or generation has dropped, and call the local technician before your parents notice. For panels on a new house, see rooftop solar for a new house.

When the internet or the power goes

Plan for it, because it will happen.

  • Every wall switch works by hand. Smart modules should sit behind ordinary switches, so a press always works.
  • Local control. Ask for devices that support Matter, a common smart-home standard. Amazon says Matter lets Alexa control a device locally during internet outages. Google Home needs a Matter-enabled hub, and Google says commands given at home then go directly to the device over the home's Wi-Fi or Thread network.
  • Remote control needs the internet. The Matter standard's FAQ says Matter-only devices need an internet-connected controller in the home, such as a smart speaker or hub, for control from outside. Keep the router on the inverter.
  • A paper list by the phone. The electrician, the plumber, the gas distributor, the neighbour with the spare key.

Controls your parents will actually use

  • Their own language. Amazon has supported Hindi and Hinglish on Alexa since September 2019. Its newer Alexa+, in early access in India since 16 September 2026, follows a change between Hindi and English in the middle of a sentence. Google lists English and Hindi for Google Assistant on its speakers in India, and says it can recognise either of two chosen languages, though only one language in each command.
  • Switches before apps. Your parents should never need a phone to switch on a light. Add a few labelled buttons, "Raat" by the bed and "Bahar" by the door, for the scenes they use.
  • Few scenes, rarely changed. Three or four scenes they know are better than twenty they forget.

Planning it into the house

If the house is being built or renovated, mark every point now: the gate, the door, the tank, the geyser, the alarms, the inverter circuits. A walkthrough video of the plan lets family members far away see the house before it is built. If you cannot be on site, our turnkey construction is meant for families who want a finished home without managing labour and materials themselves, with stage photos shared as the work moves; we build in Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi.

Our smart home and home automation service gives you a smart-home plan for every floor, with switch, sensor, camera, speaker and Wi-Fi points marked on the electrical drawings; conduit routes planned before the slab; the scenes you choose; and security points for cameras, the video door phone, the smart lock and the gate, with where each one is powered and networked. Devices are chosen to work with assistants such as Alexa or Google Home. The planning is done from your drawings, so it works anywhere in India; ask us about supply and installation for your city.

Common questions

Will my parents need a smartphone?

No. The wall switches, a few scene buttons and their voice are enough. The phone app is for you.

Is opening the door from another city safe?

It is as safe as the account behind it. Use a strong password, turn on two-step login if the app offers it, change every default password, and give temporary codes rather than the master code.

What if the Wi-Fi stops working while I am away?

The switches still work by hand, Matter devices can still be controlled inside the house, and recordings stay on the recorder. Ask the neighbour with access to restart the router.

Maa-papa ke liye sabse pehle kya lagwayein?

Gate ka video door phone, gas aur dhuen ka alarm, aur tanki ka automatic motor. Baaki cheezein baad mein, bas unke point aur pipe abhi daal dijiye.
