Cement, steel, sand and bricks for a house
A typical RCC house uses about 0.4 bag of cement and 4 kg of steel per sq ft of built-up area: about 400 bags and 4 tonnes of steel for 1,000 sq ft. Sand, aggregate and bricks vary more from house to house; the table gives the spread.
Quantities per sq ft of built-up area
Thumb rules for budgeting a single-storey RCC house on normal soil. Your engineer's drawings, bar-bending schedule and bill of quantities decide the real figures.
| Material | Per sq ft | Range in sources | 1,000 sq ft house |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cement | 0.4 bag (50 kg) | 0.38–0.50 bag | about 400 bags (20 tonnes) |
| Steel | 4 kg | 3.3–4.5 kg | about 4,000 kg (4 tonnes) |
| Sand | 1.1 cft | 0.8–1.8 cft | about 1,100 cft |
| Aggregate (gitti) | 1.1 cft | 1.0–1.35 cft | about 1,100 cft |
| Bricks | 5–8 | 5–10 | 5,000–8,000 |
| Water | 15–35 litres | 15–35 litres | 15,000–35,000 litres |
Which concrete grade? (IS 456:2000)
The minimum grade of reinforced concrete depends on what the concrete is exposed to. Nominal mixes such as 1:1.5:3 are allowed only up to M20.
| Exposure | For example | Minimum grade |
|---|---|---|
| Mild | Protected from weather, away from the coast | M20 |
| Moderate | Exposed to rain, or buried in ordinary soil (footings) | M25 |
| Severe | Severe rain, wetting and drying, coastal air | M30 |
Common questions on materials and cost
How much does a 1,000 sq ft house cost to build?
At ₹1,619 per sq ft (Build Basic, Patna) a 1,000 sq ft built-up area comes to about ₹16,19,000; at ₹3,249 per sq ft (Build Premium, Mumbai) about ₹32,49,000. Use the cost calculator for your own plot, floors and package.
How many cement bags does a 1,000 sq ft house need?
About 400 bags of 50 kg at the common thumb rule of 0.4 bag per sq ft of built-up area. The sources we checked range from 380 to 500 bags.
How much steel per sq ft for a house?
About 4 kg per sq ft for a typical RCC house, within a range of 3.3–4.5 kg. Taller buildings use more (about 5 kg per sq ft at G+5), and estimating guides add roughly 10–25% in seismic zones IV and V.
How much sand and aggregate for 1,000 sq ft?
Sources differ widely: sand 800–1,800 cft and aggregate 1,000–1,350 cft. A middle figure is about 1,100 cft of each.
How many bricks for a 1,000 sq ft house?
Roughly 5,000 to 8,000, and up to 10,000 with thick walls and many partitions. One rule is 8 bricks per sq ft of built-up area; another is 5–5.5 per sq ft of wall.
Which concrete grade should a house use?
IS 456:2000 sets M20 as the minimum for reinforced concrete in mild exposure, M25 for moderate exposure (which includes footings in ordinary soil) and M30 for severe exposure such as the coast.
What is the M20 mix ratio?
Nominal M20 is 1:1.5:3 (cement:sand:aggregate) by volume, about 8 bags of cement per cubic metre. IS 456 allows a nominal mix only up to M20; higher grades need a design mix.
Does an earthquake zone change the steel?
Yes. IS 13920 ductile detailing applies to reinforced concrete buildings in seismic zones III, IV and V, which adds steel at the joints and column ends.
