Building a house in Junagadh: what to know

Map approval
The Junagadh Municipal Corporation (JuMC) inside city limits, or the Junagadh Urban Development Authority (JUDA) in the area around it — Gujarat's eNagar online portal. JuMC's Town Planning Department grants building permission and the building use permission, registers architects, engineers and structural designers, and issues zoning certificates and reference plans that show a plot's distance from protected monuments.
Plot sizes
Plot listings in Junagadh are mostly in sq ft, and some quote square yards (1 sq yd = 9 sq ft). Listings seen in October 2026 showed plots of 1,265 sq ft on Zanzarda Road (₹40 lakh), 2,457 sq ft at Kalwa Chowk and 3,600 sq ft on the bypass road, and houses of 800–1,620 sq ft in Joshipura.
Climate
Warm-humid. Junagadh falls in the warm-humid zone of BEE's climate map, as Veraval does in BEE's table: cross-ventilation and deep window shades come first, with a roof and drains that clear heavy monsoon bursts fast.
Earthquake zone
Seismic Zone III. Junagadh is not in IS 1893's table of towns. BMTPC's Vulnerability Atlas of India (2019) puts the whole of Junagadh district, as it stood before Gir Somnath district was carved out of it in 2013, in Zone III. BIS withdrew its 2025 seismic map in March 2026, so the IS 1893:2016 zones still apply.
Ground and water
CGWB's 2014 brochure finds Junagadh district mostly on Deccan Trap basalt, with the Girnar massif rising to 1,117 m, the highest point in Gujarat; most villages of Junagadh taluka have medium black soil. In 2013 the water table lay 2–20 m below ground before the monsoon, and high fluoride is turning up more often.
Where people build
Joshipura, Zanzarda Road, Timbavadi, Talav Darwaja, Kalwa Chowk.
Good to know
On 22 July 2023, 241 mm of rain fell on Junagadh in 12 hours and the water in its streets swept away dozens of parked cars, so keep the plinth high and the drains generous.

JuMC's Town Planning Department grants building permission and the building use permission, registers architects, engineers and structural designers, and issues zoning certificates and reference plans that show a plot's distance from protected monuments. Which earthquake zone is Junagadh in, and does it change the design?

Seismic Zone III. Junagadh is not in IS 1893's table of towns. BMTPC's Vulnerability Atlas of India (2019) puts the whole of Junagadh district, as it stood before Gir Somnath district was carved out of it in 2013, in Zone III. BIS withdrew its 2025 seismic map in March 2026, so the IS 1893:2016 zones still apply. We design the structure to IS 1893 for this zone: column sizes, steel and foundations are calculated, not guessed.

What should I know about the ground before building in Junagadh?

CGWB's 2014 brochure finds Junagadh district mostly on Deccan Trap basalt, with the Girnar massif rising to 1,117 m, the highest point in Gujarat; most villages of Junagadh taluka have medium black soil.
