2D vs 3D Floor Plans: What You Need Before Building

A 2D plan tells your contractor what to build. A 3D plan tells you how it will feel. Here is when you need each.

Every construction project needs 2D drawings. 3D floor plans are optional — but they prevent the most expensive mistakes.

What a 2D plan gives you

Exact wall positions, dimensions, door and window sizes, and room labels. Your contractor and municipal approval both work from 2D drawings.

What a 3D plan adds

Furniture at real scale, circulation space, and how light falls in each room. Families use 3D plans to settle debates before a single brick is laid.

Our advice

  • Always get detailed 2D working drawings
  • Add 3D floor plans if you are unsure about room sizes
  • Add a 3D front elevation if the look of the house matters to you
